In the field of education, the term ‘intelligence’ goes beyond mere academic abilities, more than this, according to the English dictionary, it is the capacity of the mind, especially to understand principles, truths, facts, or meanings, acquire knowledge and apply it to practice, the ability to comprehend and learn.

Similarly, an intelligent student is one who not only excels academically but also exhibits a multifaceted set of qualities that equip them with understanding, to navigate the complexities of both academia and life. It is crucial to state clearly that while high grades in school are important and textbook knowledge are important aspects, intelligence in its true form exceeds these confines.

According to Dr. Catherine Jackson, licensed clinical psychologist and board certified neurotherapist is of the opinion that; “A highly intelligent person is one who is flexible in their thinking and can adapt to changes, they think before they speak or act, and they’re able to effectively manage their emotions.” Going further, he opined that; “ They possess several different types of intelligence, including but not limited to intellectual, social and emotional intelligence.”

According to the English Dictionary, it is the tendency to ask and learn about things by asking questions, investigating, or exploring. Intelligent students usually have a strong desire to learn and explore new topics beyond the classroom. It is worthy to note that this curiosity is not limited to nose deep into books, they are curious about the smallest things and usually ask a lot of questions.

One may think that an intelligent person is one who has all the answers, while this may sometimes be the case, it is not always the case, They have questions for even the smallest task because they seek clarification as this enables them to work better and even more effectively.


This is careful reasoning to the analytic and discussion of claims, beliefs and issues. Intelligent students often excel in critical thinking, analyzing information and coming up with a well-reasoned arguments or conclusions.


The ability to use imagination to produce a novel idea or product. Ability to create or invent a thing, idea. Creativity often goes hand-in-hand with intelligence, as intelligent students can approach issues from unique angles and proffer solution(s) to problems.


This is even a more complex skill, it involves, critical thinking, decision-making, creativity, and information processing. Intelligent students are effective problem-solvers, they use systematic approach that allows them to break down difficult problems into smaller, more manageable parts as well as communicate solutions effectively, both in academics and real-life situations.


Or good memory. Intelligent students  tend to have good memory retention, I.e, they tend to remember things even after a period of time. This makes it easier to recall information when needed.


The ability to adjust to new conditions. Being flexible to changing circumstances or new problems or conditions, rising to new challenges and changing your actions when doing team work with coworkers to ensure the success of a project. Intelligent students can quickly adapt to new situations and are open to change. 


The quality of being willing to consider ideas and opinions that are new or different to your own. Intelligent students are often open to different perspectives and willing to consider alternative viewpoints.


They can articulate or pass on their thoughts effectively both in writing and speaking. Of course, the importance of communication cannot be overemphasized, good writing and speaking skills is not only important in the classroom but outside these classrooms. Therefore one crucial sign of an intelligent student that cannot be over stressed is effective communication. Ability to express ones idea, thoughts and what not in the language understandable to the people around him is a sign that such person is intelligent.


Motivation is an incentive or reason for doing something. Intelligent students are usually self-driven and motivated to achieve their goals. They reach inward and find a reason to push forward even when things are not looking like it. This enables them to adapt to new challenges and thrive.


It means reliability or uniformity; the quality of being consistent. Firmness in character, of constitution, substantiality, durabily, persistence, are the attributes of an intelligent student. Even in their open-mindedness, they still have the ability to be consistent in their patterns, not easily swayed in their tack of life. They maintain a consistent work ethic, studying regularly and staying organized.

The above qualities are not unattainable, but with determination and diligence which can only stem from your own decision to make a difference it can be attained.
